About The Welsh Dragon
The Welsh Dragon Project will be the most exciting cultural landmark of its kind to be built in the UK in modern times. Welsh Art Dealer, Simon Wingett and the team behind the project are extremely passionate about the Welsh Dragon and they are keen to get everyone in Wales who wants to celebrate everything the country stands for to get involved and help make it a reality.
This ambitious project will not only to give Wales something to shout about in Olympic year 2012, it will also leave a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy as well as raising significant funds for cancer charities via the Frank Wingett Cancer Relief Fund. The Dragon will be constructed just off the A5 near Chirk in North Wales.
A Project of International Significance
The project was given the go-ahead in February 2011 when planning permission was secured from the local authority. A massive media campaign is now underway to raise awareness of the project to a national and international audience.
With planning permission now granted, there is now nothing to stand in the way of the Dragon Sculpture being built, but the aim is to have it built ready for the Olympics in 2012. If the sculpture is in place ready for the Olympics it will attract some vital additional tourism for Wales and allow the country to really share in the international buzz the Olympics will create.
Breathing New Life into Wales
Our ambition is to build the most advanced visitor centre in the UK today, at the heart of which a giant will be a 41-metre high bronze dragon perched at the top of the viewing tower.
The iconic sculpture will operate as a tour de force, raising money for cancer charities who champion palliative care and early diagnosis. Comparisons in terms of its scale can be drawn with the statue of liberty and Christ overlooking Rio de Janeiro.
A Major New Tourist Attraction for Wales
With tourism a growth industry within Wales, the dragon keenly represents the power of Wales to succeed on the global stage. It is a bold and clear message to the rest of the world – Wales is firmly on the map as a cultural destination.
Speaking closely to other ‘dragon countries’ in the orient, the Welsh dragon represents a bond and a link, encouraging collaborations in industry, commerce and cultural exchange. When it is built, The Welsh Dragon aims to deliver on all levels be it via joint ventures, tourism, sponsorship, employment and return on investment.
We are currently inviting funding for the project as well as sponsorship from businesses in Wales and beyond. Email info@thewelshdragon.co.uk for more details on how your business can benefit from being associated with a major global landmark.
